My thesis also contains a detailed examination of the basic ideas of the text, examination actually undertaken for the first time. In the present paper, I tackle its doctrinal stance from two different angles: (1) the sources cited or referred to in the text; and (2) the criticism of Buddhist schools and interpretations different from the Zen tradition. This analysis sheds more light upon the basic philosophical position of The Treatise on Seeing One’s Nature and Attaining Buddhahood and points even more convincingly to the possibility that the work is closely related to Nōnin. It is hoped that this will lead to a better understanding of Nōnin, the man and his thought.
